While doing this, I tried SUV camping for the first time. When I visited Valley of Fire, I was on a road trip to see some Southwest National Parks. Tip: You can also camp for free on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land located outside the park boundaries, you will see RVs parked on the BLM land as you drive toward the park along the Valley of Fire Hwy after exiting off I-15 N. Boy, was I wrong! There was already a line to enter the park, and the ranger at the entrance station told me the camping spots were full. If you can get a campsite, I highly recommend it! You’ll have more time to explore the park, plus you get to experience sunrise and sunset and see how the sun’s light illuminates the fiery red rocks the park is named for.Īll campsites are first-come-first-served, so you need to plan to get there early to get a spot! I arrived around 10 a.m., thinking I was early enough. RV camping with utility hookups costs an additional $10/night. It is $25/night for non-NV vehicles and $20/night for Nevada vehicles. In addition to the entrance fee, there is a per night camping fee. With only a total of 72 campsites, these campgrounds fill up fast during the peak seasons. Nobody knows exactly what the symbols mean, but anthropologists have some guesses. There are two campgrounds at Valley of Fire State Park. There were other symbols of suns, medicine, plants, spirits, and some indicating whether there was water nearby. There were people, people dancing, people with horns, and handprints. There were deer, lizards, sheep, and snakes. There is an even greater variety of symbols than at Atlatl Rock. Be sure to look at the blackened sandstone walls along the hike, because they are completely covered with petroglyphs. The trail goes along a wash that was very muddy when we hiked it. Mouse’s Tank Trail was our favorite place to hike in the park. Aside from it being so hot, it eventually turned out to be a good run. We finished the run by approaching the loop and accessing the slot canyon from the other direction and running on the road a bit as well. We probably would have gone through the water if we weren’t trying to do the hike as a run. The slot canyon would have been really neat as well because it was so narrow. The colorful White Domes were very beautiful though, and the shapes they formed were incredible. The trail began in deep sand, the next part was a scramble that was pretty much impossible to run, and the slot canyon along the trail was completely filled with foot deep water. We wanted to do a trail run in the park, and we decided to try and run White Domes Trail. Seeing puddles in the desert is a bizarre and unique experience. At the same time, it felt like everything in the park had been cleaned and the plants were brighter and greener. There was a great deal of debris and gravel over some of the roads in the park though, and the rain affected some of the trails as well. But once the rain and hail hit the metal roof, it was so loud and forceful that even Ian couldn’t sleep through it.įortunately we were in very high area without any risk of flash flooding. Somehow Ian managed to sleep through all that. I woke up to thunder rumbles, and I watched dry purple lighting crack across the sky for about an hour before the rain hit us. The night before we arrived in the park, we experienced a massive desert storm. New instruction manuals look unappealing compared with the box art.Let us follow the planned future with regards to the sustainable packaging agenda: Surely this makes an argument for a ‘consistent unboxing experience’ irrelevant? ***Conspiracy Theory Warning: YOU will ask for paper instructions to be removed from your LEGO Sets! The cover of the manual is obscured during the unboxing process in such a situation. This will mean putting instruction manuals and sticker sheets for larger sets, at least, into cardboard envelopes, as we saw with the ECTO-1 If nothing else, an instruction manual serves to support a sticker sheet in a plastic bag.īut could this bring a ray of hope? Long term, one of the company’s stated goals is to eliminate single-use plastic in packaging. For example – differently shaped elements are used for different colours.īUT when parents are using LEGO as a screen-free diversion for the kids, the reliance on a screen will disappoint a lot of people. While the building instructions App has a lot going for it: the experience on a tablet of being able to zoom a pdf or rotate and enlarge a build in 3 dimensions is pretty good, let down occasionally by colour matching, which is fine if building the primary model for the first time, as this colour issue is often addressed in the elements available in a given bag. At least with Super Mario, you can download a pdf of the building instructions. I must admit, I really like the sets, but do worry about builds where connectivity is essential for the build experience. This was followed by the introduction of LEGO Super Mario- which relies on the digital building instructions to be able to demonstrate aspects of the play experience.Ĭoming up this June, we have the introduction of LEGO City Missions, where the build experience becomes part of an interactive storytelling experience: the instructions consist of a QR code and, on the flip side, an invitation to try out the other sets in the range. Starting with 2020’s Monkie Kid sets, we saw the introduction of progress bars and celebratory stars on completion of sub builds- giving the paper instructions an App-Like feel. I wonder if this is another step towards making paper instructions irrelevant to the consumer. Somehow I don’t believe this change will be followed by a reduction in the base cost of sets… The Digital Long Game? **Tin Foil Hat Conspiracy theory warning** Whoops, that also reduced the cost to produce. While the company are looking for more sustainable solutions, they could simply use the argument “it uses less ink” – less transport, less waste and less to purchase. The manual can be its old, colourful self. The Long Term plan is to see single use plastics eliminated in the next few years (2025 springs to mind), as such, instruction manuals and sticker sheets are likely to be packed in cardboard envelopes. When you have a collection of instructions scattered across the room, dramatically different covers are easier to distinguish between, rather than close focussing on set numbers rendered art, which can get a bit same-same after a while. I do feel that removing the box art from the instructions is disingenuous to the designers who produce the box art which sells the product in the first place. So the box is often thrown out (or more rarely sold on BrickLink), while the instructions are retained – not only for future use but as a visual memento of the box art. Unfortunately, boxes take up a lot of space. I really enjoy the box art: it provides a visual branding for a LEGO theme, as well as individual sets. Why would I want a Ninjago set to feel the same as a Friends set? I certainly don’t need that consistency between themes, and I don’t really need the manual to look the same as a bag of parts. I apologise for the incoherent rant that follows. There are many things I look for when opening a LEGO set aimed at kids, but a visually consistent unboxing experience is not one of them. Now, I try to maintain a positive outlook on most decisions made by The LEGO Group, but I am not a fan of this one. As we are gradually replacing single-use plastic bags with paper-based bags in our boxes, other in-box materials such as the cover of Building Instructions have also been re-designed for a visually consistent unboxing experience. The LEGO Group is on a journey to make its packaging more sustainable by 2025. Today, via the LEGO Ambassadors Network, the Packaging Team released this statement: Utility giant PacifiCorp, which serves customers across a six-state region in the West and operates as Rocky Mountain Power in Wyoming, first gave notice in early 2019 that it was considering moving up retirement dates for some of its coal-power generation fleet. “We also have multiple service lines operating out of Casper.”ĭonate Now The Jim Bridger power plant near Rock Springs during its nightly shift change. “Regarding a short-term plan, we will continue to have a footprint in Rock Springs and will keep some cement crews in the area,” Fuchs said via email. Halliburton plans to remain active in Wyoming, spokeswoman Fuchs said. In the early 2000s, Rock Springs served as Halliburton’s largest fracking headquarters in the world. It is, unfortunately, the nature of the business.” “Mom or dad pick up and start living in North Dakota and come home every two weeks? It’s very disruptive, certainly. “Do you want to pick up and move your family in the middle of the school year?” he asked. Despite that, he said, the layoffs came without warning, and it’s hitting families hard. Employees have been offered job opportunities at Halliburton’s operations in Texas and North Dakota, Smith said. Commissioner Smith said his constituents estimate the number of layoffs in Rock Springs at 185 - 28% of the 650 jobs trimmed throughout Halliburton’s Rocky Mountain region. In an email statement to WyoFile, Halliburton spokeswoman Erin Fuchs said the company is not providing location-specific job-loss numbers. And so do people want to stick around?” Losses stack up But is there a job that’s not oil and gas, and I’m not going to get laid off? They hear of Halliburton, and that scares people off. “Younger people might love living here and love the hunting and everything else. “It’s something of a difficult sell right now,” Smith said of the area’s appeal. The age group shrunk by 5.1% from 2014 to 2018, a rate only exceeded by Vermont and Rhode Island. Wyoming ranks third in the nation for losses among its millennial population, according to the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services’ August edition of Trends. Still, local leaders wonder whether the region can attract new high-paying jobs that might help slow the continual exodus of Wyoming youth who move to urban areas in neighboring states where the rate of job growth is double, and sometimes triple, Wyoming’s. “I think it’s kind of a mixed bag,” Smith said. The region’s trona industry is preparing to expand, Smith said, and Rocky Mountain Power will continue to operate two of its four coal units at the Jim Bridger Plant outside Rock Springs well beyond 2030. At least not one as significant as the downturn of the ‘80s, when bumper stickers reminded everyone, “Last One To Leave, Turn Out The Lights.” Sweetwater County Commissioner Jeffrey Smith said the combination of Halliburton’s layoffs and Rocky Mountain Power’s pending closures doesn’t feel like the harbinger of a bust. Despite that, residents and leaders have yet to come together in a formal capacity to forge a transition plan. But as the clock ticks toward coal plant retirements, few locals deny that the nationwide shift from coal in favor of renewables will fundamentally alter the economic landscape of southwest Wyoming. Residents here are accustomed to the volatility of the oil and gas industry. Thanks for your support of WyoFile! We rely on loyal members like you to sustain our reporting and grow the WyoFile community.Ĭommunities in southwest Wyoming got a double dose of bad news this month as oil and gas company Halliburton announced layoffs at its Rock Springs headquarters just as Wyoming utility Rocky Mountain Power finalized a plan to fast-track the retirement of four of its six coal-fired power units. AutoPano Giga is a powerful tool that can automatically stitch multiple photos into a seamless panorama. Unfortunately, Kolor closed its doors in 2018, but they left a generous gift for their loyal customers: a free license for AutoPano Giga. After all the automatic work is done, the user can use the software to check all the smallest details of the panoramic image and make adjustments where necessary using an enhanced suite of editing tools. This software was developed by Kolor, a company that specialized in image stitching and virtual tours. An advanced color correcting engine prevents the "vignetting" effect that plagues less advanced panoramic shots. Autopano Giga allows you to stitch 2, 20, or 2,000 images. According to Kolor, it's been mathematically proven as the most superior technology in the world when it comes to identifying similarities between images. Select 'Detect' icon on upper left corner to analyze stitching, select 'Edit' after analysis, enter the editing interface. Analyze images, click icons to open 'Image settings', modify 'Lens type' to be 'Fisheye', 'Focal' for 10.57mm, click on 'OK' to confirm. The secret behind the technology is SIFT image stitching technology, which was developed during a research project at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Open Autopano Giga, click icon to import original images of 6 lenses. The file can then be exported for use in other applications. The images are then uploaded into the software, which "stitches" the images together to create a stunning panorama. Unlike 360 cameras and lens-laden, throw-able balls, Autopano works with overlapping shots taken by a single-angle, standard camera. Autopano, which is considered by its developer, Kolor, to be the "best image stitching technology in the world," certainly has enough features and quality to live up to that claim. Overall Opinion: As the fields of photography and videography have advanced technologically, so too have people's desires to create stunning panoramas. The batch of 10 spins concept isn't outrageously common, but there are options. Or maybe not, since some of the gaming aspects might be just as polarising. Perhaps there are enough gamblers interested in the pinup scene to make this a hit? Pinup Girls has one of those self-assured personalities that seems like it'll be the sort of thing players either love or loathe. It might also elicit one or two suspicions about how the game will look, and its appearance is possibly the overriding factor in choosing whether to actually play it or not. Not every day a slot built around pinup girls comes along, so Pinup Girls might elicit a certain amount of curiosity. Pinup Girls slot - free spins Pinup Girls: Slot Verdict When buying them, free spins are triggered randomly by 3, 4, or 5 scatters and have a top theoretical return of 96.33%. Lastly, where available, free spins can be bought for 100x the bet. Multipliers remain until the round ends as well they do not reset after each fifth free spin. Then, on every 5th free spin, the positions that were marked by wilds transform into wilds and take on the positions' multiplier. In free spins, multipliers are activated every 5 spins rather than every 10, and when wilds land, they mark the position they landed in. When 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols land, 10, 15, or 20 free spins are respectively awarded. At the end of the ten spins, the multipliers are reset. Multipliers are applied to any win which passes through them, and if more than one wild with a multiplier is part of a win, the multipliers are added together. On the 10th spin, all wild symbols that land on the middle three reels take the multiplier indicated at their respective position. These values remain this way until the 10th spin. On each spin in a 10-spin batch, random positions have their multiplier value increased by +1. All positions on the middle three reels can have a potential multiplier. Pinup Girls: Slot Features Pinup Girls slot - free spins Wilds substitute for all symbols except the scatter. Rolling Stones-style lips appear on the wild symbols which appear on reels 2, 3, or 4. Five symbol winning lines payout 2-3x the bet when consisting of 10-A card symbols, or 5-37.5x the bet for five shoes, perfume bottles, or the four pinup models. With three RTP models available, return values vary from 94.43% to 96.44%, marked as highly volatility by Pragmatic (5/5).Ī 5-reel, 4-row game panel is where the action goes down, and players are provided with 20 paylines to land winning combinations of three to five of a kind on. Choices range from 20 p/c to £/€100 per spin, and any device may be used. Progression is saved at each bet level, so changing the bet means you start a new round of 10 spins, but going back to the previous levels picks up where you left off. Pinup Girls is one of those slots that plays in batches of 10 spins where on the tenth spin, something special may occur. If it sounds alright so far, then bet selection is up next. What you can expect, as well as the pinup models, are pinup model-related objects, loads of pink colouration, flashing lights, and a jazzy bring it on soundtrack. In its defence, the name is a bit of a giveaway as to what to expect. On the other hand, if leggy, busty 'babes' doing 'babe things' makes your blood curdle, then Pinup Girls probably isn't the right match. No judgements here, by the way if this is an area of interest, more power to you. It's loud, confident, and the ladies here appear to wear Cyndi Lauper Girls Just Want to Have Fun ethos proudly on their sleeves. Pinup Girls is one of those games that you kind of know is your cup of tea, or not, right away. Pinup modelling is strongly associated with the 1950s and WW2, though subcultures still exist today, and Pragmatic Play's online slot Pinup Girls explores the phenomenon in a gambling form. They were also called 'cheesecake photos', 'cheesecake' being slang for raunchy pics, while the male equivalent was the 'beefcake'. Soon after this commotion, as I was retrieving my line while fishing upstream into deep, riffled pockets, almost ready to cast again, my line went tight… FISH ON! After just 10 minutes, Hugo shouted “FISH ON” – we were off to a swimmingly successful start! As he retracted his steps into the shallows, a silver rainbow trout retired into his net. The Turner Twins wondered upstream to the fast-flowing rapids underneath a narrow bridge called the Ginger Beer Pool. We were all complete beginners in the grayling department – I had only seen sightings of these magnificent fish, also known as the ‘Lady of the Stream’, on social media pages and filling the pages of glossy magazines. Without hesitation we jumped into waders and had our first glimpse of the beautiful river disappearing into the distance. Parking at the headwaters of the Orvis Kimbridge beat we were greeted by our hosts, Richard Banbury and Rachael Hay, who had organsied the array of kit and, unbeknownst to us, caterers who provided a glorious lunch. With the weather a mild 15 degrees in mid-December, we set off in convoy from Avis in South Kensington with our shiny new Land Rover Discovery Sport and mini-me rouge Nissan Micra! The grayling team included The Turner Twins, Patrick Tillard (hugely talented photographer for the day) from The Gentleman’s Journal, Tom Gladdle and three lovely Zambuni girls, Kelly Double, Laura Bott and Kate Fensterstock. For eager fishermen who get itchy feet during the close season, grayling certainly provide the fix the perfect tonic to the fishing blues. |
